Visit to Trollharen, Sweden

Boathouses in Trollharen

Heike went to Trollharen to purchase fish for the restaurant at Ljusnefors Camping and invited Marion and me along.  It was a beautiful fishing village.

Trollharen is on the peninsula of Granön in the southeast Söderhamn Municipality not too far from Ljusne.  There were mostly farms here in the 1500's with restricted fishing rights.

Russians invaded the area in 1721 but Granön was spared because the leader said there was only an old woman with some hens in Granön.  In the 1800's, Gävleborg lifted the restrictions on fishing in Granön and Trollharen was settled by fisherman but only in the summer because the winters were too harsh.  As late as 1928 there were only a few small farmhouses and fishing cottages and was mostly accessed by boat.   The population peaked in  the 1940's with 13 fishermen and their families.  The last fisherman died in 1983 at the age of 80.  Today it is mostly inhabited with summer homes where people from cities come to spend 4+ weeks of their summer holiday.  There is still a large fishing trade, done by a fishmonger at Trollharen Fisk.  They purchase fish from the archipelago fisherman to sell and use in their restaurant.  They smoke some of their fish on the premises and run a large restaurant.

Here are some of the summer homes located in Trollharen:

This is my favorite on the water!!

I love this natural fence.

It was fun to see a new place.  This part of Sweden is really beautiful, many forests, huge rocks and millions of wildflowers.
