Jodhpur

Jodhpur

After a long night train ride from Delhi, it was great to get to Jodhpur.  A bus picked us up at the train station, the same bus that would be with us the rest of the trip, ending up back in Delhi!

Our hotel, Marvel UMed, a heritage property, in Jodhpur was really nice.  We checked in straight from the train station, got a shower and had breakfast.  We were greeted by the staff who adorned our foreheads with red color and rice granules signifying 'welcome'.

After breakfast, we continued in Tuk Tuks to the base of the Mehrangarh Fort!  This is one of the largest forts in India.  Built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, the fort is situated above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls.  There are many expansive courtyards, intricate carvings, several museums and imposing gates.  Rao Jodha, founded Jodhpur (previously known as Marwar) and built the fort to protect the city.  In the museums, there were many example of Elephant howdahs, adorned seats attached to elephants backs for transportation.  There were also Palanquins, a popular means of travel for women nobility and men on special occasions.  An assortment of armour was really interesting as well as paintings and a turban collection!

There was a special ceremony going on and the Maharajah of Jodhpur was there!

We had lunch at the Fort and in the evening, we had dinner at a roof top restaurant with a view of the Fort!

Jodhpur is known as the 'blue city' for the blue color on the houses in the old city area.

While in Jodhpur, Adi took us to the Sadar Bazaar where we visited a generations old spice shop and a textile warehouse and showroom
